HANDSPINNING: EMBRACING SLOWNESS
SATURDAY 20TH JANUARY 2018
Christabel Balfour Weaving Studio, Peckham
+ FREE ENTRY TO OUR INTERVIEW SERIES 'LET'S CHAT' ON 18TH NOVEMEBER/ 7pm
The Bezalel Handspinning workshop is a three-hour class exploring the process of spinning wool by hand, and covers everything you need to know to get started with spinning your own yarn.
The class begins with an introduction to the tools and materials, including the various types of sheep’s fleece that can be used, their colours and their properties. Next you’ll be taken through the various spinning techniques and learn how to create yarn from the raw fleece using a drop spindle. Each person will receive plenty of one-to-one teaching and will go home with a selection of raw sheep’s wool, a drop spindle and instruction booklet.
As part of our weekend theme of Embracing Winter, this class will focus on the slowness of the process. Breathing exercises will be used to help acclimatise your body to the rhythms of spinning, and you will be encouraged to slow down, listen to your breathing and heartbeat, and focus on going slowly.
The workshop will be taught by Jessica Mason, a talented hand-spinner and natural dyer. After training in spinning and dyeing in Norway and Spain, Jessica has established a base in the south west of England where she works with local sheep farmers and runs regular workshops.
